New Head Coach In La-La Land

In a shocking turn of events the Los Angeles Lakers have hired former Suns and Knicks head coach Mike D’Antoni.

D’Antoni is known as one of the best offensive coaches in the league, but it also known for his lack of attention to the defensive side of the game. Coming in to this season, defense was already a concern for the Lakers, while they were able to add a three time Defensive Player of the Year in Dwight Howard, they also added Steve Nash who is known to be a defensive liability.

The most concerning part of this hire is the fact that the Lakers passed up on former coach Phil Jackson. The Lakers had interviewed the coach and reports had surfaced that the job was “his to lose”, but Lakers Vice President Jim Buss decided that Jackson’s demands of more control over basketball operations, and less travel were too steep of a price.

The bright spot for Lakers fans is that Steve Nash won two MVP awards and Joe Johnson became one of the best shooting guards in the league when they were coached by D’Antoni in Phoenix, hopefully this will translate in to a successful year for D’Antoni’s newest back court duo of Nash and Kobe Bryant.
